The United States is set to immediately transfer a terminal high altitude area defense system, known as THAAD, to Israel as a response to potential ballistic missile threats from Iran, according to a report from Yedioth Ahronoth. This move comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East and is drawing significant attention.
The decision to provide this missile defense system was made at Israel’s request, aiming to enhance its military capabilities in the region and bolster its air defense support. Israel has reached out to Washington for additional military resources to cope with the intensifying situation.
Since Iran launched hundreds of missiles at Israel in early October, discussions have been ongoing between U.S. and Israeli officials regarding possible responses. U.S. officials have advised Israel to refrain from targeting Iranian strategic locations, particularly with the upcoming American elections in mind. On October 9, President Biden spoke with Prime Minister Netanyahu for the first time in weeks, urging Israel to respond “proportionately.”
Notably, just weeks after the outbreak of hostilities in the Israel-Hamas war last October, the U.S. expedited the delivery of THAAD and additional Patriot missile defense systems to the Middle East.
Meanwhile, U.S. allies in the Persian Gulf, including Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates, have assured both Iran and Washington that they will not permit Israel to use their airspace for strikes against Iran.
