On October 13, Italy’s largest bank, UniCredit, issued a public apology due to a security breach that compromised the bank accounts of prominent individuals, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
In a statement, UniCredit acknowledged that “an unfaithful employee gravely violated laws, regulations, and internal procedures by improperly accessing data and information belonging to certain clients.”
The bank reported that it has informed data protection authorities and terminated the employee involved. “We deeply regret what has occurred and assure that such incidents must never happen again,” the statement continued.
According to Reuters, as per Italian media reports on October 10, the employee was found to have been monitoring the bank accounts of thousands of customers, including that of Prime Minister Meloni. In an interview, Meloni confirmed the breach and emphasized that the judiciary should investigate the incident and any potential conspiracies tied to it.
