Interviewer: With the recent heavy rainfall affecting Thailand, including Bangkok, we’re seeing serious flooding threats. Can you share an update on the situation in Chiang Mai, which is known for its tourist attractions and was hit by significant flooding on the 5th?
Local Official: Absolutely, Chiang Mai has been dealing with severe flooding lately. While we’ve seen some water levels recede in the city center, there are still major areas with standing water, particularly in the low-lying zones.
Interviewer: What are the current living conditions like for residents in those flooded areas?
Local Resident: The water levels continue to rise. Until they decrease, we’re unable to start the cleaning process or make any internal repairs.
Interviewer: Despite the flooding, how are people managing their daily routines?
Local Resident: In the flooded areas, many of us are wading through the water to salvage our belongings using makeshift tools. We’ve built sandbag barriers in front of our homes to keep water out, and some of us are using pumps to drain water from inside. With roads submerged, locals have put up signs to warn about deep water zones to help ensure safe travel for both pedestrians and vehicles.
Interviewer: How has the flooding impacted tourists in the region?
Local Official: Initially, there were concerns about over 100 Chinese tourists being stranded in Chiang Mai. However, I can confirm that all of them have been safely evacuated.
Interviewer: What measures were implemented to guarantee the safety of these tourists?
Chinese Consul General in Chiang Mai, Chen Haiping: Thanks to the coordinated efforts of everyone involved, we are pleased to report that there have been no casualties among Chinese citizens during this flooding. Even those who were briefly trapped were rescued without incident. Furthermore, Chinese businesses in the area have not experienced significant disruptions. Our consulate will keep monitoring the situation and offer necessary assistance to ensure the safety of our nationals.
