10 “Masterpieces” from Quanzhou were presented to the Confucius Institute in Indonesia

On September 16 in Jakarta, we had the opportunity to interview a representative regarding a recent initiative aimed at boosting the international influence and dissemination of Minnan culture. This event took place on the evening of September 15 during the 2024 World Minnan Culture Festival in Indonesia.

What prompted the donation of these artworks to the Confucius Institute at Al Azhar University in Indonesia?

“Absolutely,” the representative began. “This initiative is designed to showcase Quanzhou’s exceptional traditional crafts and to strengthen the cultural identity of the overseas Chinese community from Quanzhou, especially in Indonesia.”

We learned that a total of ten remarkable pieces, created by renowned artisans from Quanzhou, were donated. What specific types of artwork were included in this donation?

The representative elaborated, saying, “We have an impressive collection that highlights the skills of our region’s craftsmen. This includes a ceramic dragon cup by Wang Jingmin, who is recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage inheritor, and a ‘Wanshang Teapot’ made by Zheng Xiongpeng, a national skilled technician.”

They continued to list additional notable pieces: “There’s a shadow sculpture titled ‘Huinü Fengqing’ by Zhang Qiuxia, along with a traditional paper weaving artwork called ‘Qianli Jiangshan Tu’ by Fang Bishiung. We also received a puppet head carved by Huang Qinghui, a distinguished sculptor, and an innovative vine weaving creation by Chen Yanqing.”

Additionally, they highlighted the importance of tea in this donation, noting that both oolong tea from Chen Lianggu and Anxi Tieguanyin tea donated by Lin Shuitian, a representative of a long-established brand from Quanzhou, were included.

What does this event signify for the promotion of Quanzhou’s cultural identity in Indonesia?

“This donation is more than just the artwork; it’s a means to share the unique charm and cultural heritage of Quanzhou’s traditional craftsmanship,” the representative stressed. “These pieces will be displayed in the China Space, a collaborative project between the Chinese Embassy in Indonesia and the National Mosque of Indonesia. This exhibition is an important opportunity to promote Chinese culture and shine a spotlight on the richness of Minnan culture.”

In conclusion, the representative pointed out that the event serves as a bridge connecting the rich traditions of Quanzhou with the larger community in Indonesia, reinforcing cultural ties and deepening appreciation for Minnan heritage among the Chinese diaspora.
