On October 9, a significant project launch event was held in Turpan, Xinjiang, marking the start of the major construction phase for the Xinjiang Huadian Shanshan Pumped Storage Power Station.
During the event, Turpan’s Deputy Mayor, Keyiser Keyum, shared his thoughts on this milestone. “Today, we are thrilled to announce the groundbreaking of 17 major projects across Turpan City, with a total investment of 66.42 billion yuan,” he said. “These projects cover a variety of sectors, including renewable energy, coal and chemical processing, and silicon-based new materials. We believe they will serve as a cornerstone for our development, helping us meet our fixed asset investment targets and driving high-quality economic growth.”
One of the most notable projects is the Xinjiang Huadian Shanshan 1.4 million kilowatt pumped storage facility, poised to be the first approved pumped storage power station in Xinjiang for 2024. Li Guopu, the party secretary and executive director of Xinjiang Huadian Gaochang Thermal Power Co., highlighted the environmental advantages of the project, stating, “Once completed, this plant will produce an additional 1.75 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity each year, which is equivalent to saving 650,000 tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.753 million tons.”
Turpan’s abundance of wind and solar energy resources, along with its favorable development conditions, positions it as a key area for new energy initiatives in Xinjiang. To date, the city has installed over 20 million kilowatts of renewable energy capacity.
